Our Leader in Me Journey
|
|
Jody Richards Elementary School (JRES) opened its doors for the first time in August 2012. The Leader in Me initiative was an excellent way for us to make a successful transition from several other schools as we formed to become the JRES Rockets!
Our population of students and teachers is made up of some who experienced the Leader in Me process for several years and had success at Natcher Elementary School, which is now a Leader in Me Lighthouse School. So, they helped to lead the way for all of us. The other large part of our population had only experienced the Leader in Me initiative for a short time, however; all of our students and teachers have embraced the process very positively!
Even though we merged very different levels of leadership school experience, we began with a much stronger emphasis with the 7 Habits already being embedded successfully throughout all grade levels. We are a good example of how to jump in and use those stakeholders who buy-in quickly to help build excitement for the initiative, which will carry over to others.
We try to keep our main focus in every decision we make to be student driven. While we still have a long road ahead, JRES is moving forward with a commitment to the leadership model. We are always searching for ways to stretch learning by providing leadership opportunities. For example, our daily morning school-wide meeting is student led, as well as many other areas of our building throughout the instructional day.
We are very fortunate to have a local Chamber of Commerce that has invested in helping our school system fund the Franklin Covey training. We believe that our students are offered many opportunities to foster and develop their gifts and talents through the Leader in Me initiative. While we are just in year three of implementation, we believe we have already started to make a strong impact on developing our students’ 21st Century skills, as we strive to prepare tomorrow’s leaders.
